What Is Trackman, and Why Do Golfers Trust It?

It's not marketing language. Trackman has become the standard by which serious golfers measure their game, and understanding why matters if you're deciding how to spend your practice time this year.

The Short Answer

Trackman is a dual radar tracking system originally developed for military and aerospace radar applications before it was adapted for golf. Instead of estimating where a ball goes, it measures the entire flight, from clubhead to touchdown, using real radar data, then layers in club and ball data points most players have never had access to before: clubhead speed, angle of attack, club path, face angle at impact, smash factor, spin rate, spin axis, launch angle, carry distance, and total distance, among others.


The difference between Trackman and a basic launch monitor is the difference between a guess and a measurement. Camera-based or infrared systems interpolate ball flight from a small sample of data near impact. Trackman's radar tracks the ball for its entire trajectory, which is part of why it's the system PGA Tour broadcasts, equipment manufacturers, and tour-level coaches rely on when the numbers actually need to be right.

Why That Level of Precision Matters for Your Game

Most golfers have a rough sense of their misses. They know the driver tends to leak right, or the seven iron comes up short more often than it should. What they don't have is the specific data that explains why.

Trackman closes that gap. A golfer who thinks they're "swinging too hard" might discover their real issue is an open clubface at impact. A player chasing more distance might learn their attack angle, not their speed, is capping their carry.
